No pay for no work
The state comptroller’s sally into the swamp of senatorial malfeasance may do little public good in the end, but his decision to withhold senators’ paychecks has to be heartening to all who are fed up with the gamesmanship that has been substituting for governance in Albany. Honduras poses a test
President Obama is facing his toughest test yet in Central America, the June 28 coup against President Manuel Zelaya in Honduras. Whether he passes that test may depend upon how he responds to baiting by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. (Updated: 07/08/09 8:19 AM )
Improve jail care
People who are being held in jail are properly referred to as being “in custody.” That’s a word that means a lot more than just being locked up. It means being in someone else’s care. (Updated: 07/08/09 6:46 AM )
Victory too late
Chalk this up as another sad might-have-been from the days of Eliot Spitzer—but this is a case where Spitzer’s failure was caused not by his own flaws, but by the meddling of Bush administration officials whose relationships with the businesses they were supposed to be regulating mirrored the swinish behavior that ended Spitzer’s political career. Locking through

Celebrating independence
Need a lesson in democracy this Fourth of July? Just look at the brutal crackdown during demonstrations over a disputed presidential election in Iran, and the peaceful transfers of power that mark governance in this nation should jump into much clearer focus. (Updated: 07/04/09 8:21 AM )
It seems to us . . .
SILVER LINING: Having spent a week or so watching the State Senate put the fun in dysfunctional—a protester in a clown suit, each party holding its own gavel-in/gavel-out pseudo-sessions, a wandering Republican in search of a Coke counted quickly by Democrats so they could claim a quorum—it was heartening to have Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver visit this editorial board to assure us all was well in Albany except for those rascals in the other house.
